During the 2016 US presidential election campaign, Hungary's prime minister emerged as the sole head of an EU nation to endorse Donald Trump. This alignment came as no shock, in light of Mr Orbán's embrace of divisive ideas such as the "great replacement" theory and his crackdowns on journalistic liberties. Observers observe that Mr Orbán practically pioneered the Maga movement, with ex-Trump adviser Steve Bannon lauding Orbán as a precursor to Trump.
Recently, with crucial Hungarian elections only half a year off, the US president offered electoral assistance. With Orbán aims for a fifth term in office leading a country he calls an illiberal state, his ruling party is behind in surveys. A visit to Washington resulted in more than Trump campaign souvenirs; it secured highly beneficial campaign boosts.
Although previously lecturing European nations on the imperative to stop all energy imports from Russia, and threatening restrictions against states still to purchase Russian crude, Donald Trump agreed to allow a special exemption for Hungary – the largest EU consumer of Russian crude. As Orbán stated, the US government also pledged to offer a “financial shield” to Hungary's capital if it encounters any later issues, given that Brussels persists in holding back billions in EU funding to Hungary on grounds of violations of legal standards.
The details of this agreement seem unclear. Yet the US president has shown his inclination to assist like-minded partners after the America granted a $20bn emergency credit line to Javier Milei, the South American leader. While Mr Orbán did not secure a Trump trip to Budapest to Budapest, the discussions nevertheless was a successful endeavor.
In the corridors of the EU, Trump's actions likely highlighted the international consequences of the forthcoming polls, before which the opposition candidate, Magyar, has a solid advantage in opinion data. EU chiefs know not to look for steady principles from the US government, and have grown used to the US president’s attempts to undermine the EU. However Mr Orbán’s exemption – obtained in exchange for an deal to acquire US gas and nuclear energy – blatantly weakens EU aspirations to end Russian oil and gas by the year 2027.
The opposition candidate has steered clear of vowing a significant change on the war in Ukraine, and focused his campaigning on home affairs, while highlighting the necessity for the country to finally behave as a positive member state. After years of so many years of trolling, the European Union can only hold out hope. The Hungarian leader's apathy to core EU ideals, like the upholding of minority rights and the freedom of non-governmental organizations, has long been a source of shame for the European Union. His ongoing blocking tactics toward the Ukraine issue could harm its long-term safety.
