The collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination unveiled the initial complete preview for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on Wednesday. It was showcased in a special Nintendo Direct that highlighted the soon-to-release cartoon movie.
The sequel to the 2023 hit film The Super Mario Bros. Movie, this fresh entry will transport Mario to the far corners of the cosmos. There, he will encounter a new princess and a formidable new rival in Bowser Jr., the offspring of the Koopa King.
Similar to the Wii console classics that act as its source material, Mario will depart from the well-known surroundings of the Mushroom Kingdom to journey through the cosmos. Throughout his extensive trek, he will reunite with some well-known personalities, including the Luma, a fan favorite from the previous film.
Yet it looks like Mario and his brother Luigi will face a fresh enemy in the form of Bowser's irate young son, who apparently wields metal-based powers. Worth mentioning, the trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is not solely focused on visuals from the Galaxy games; it also contains hints to other beloved games like Super Mario Odyssey and Bowser's Fury.
The feature will feature once again of the initial voice actors, with Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
New additions to the ensemble for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are Brie Larson, who will voice Rosalina, and Benny Safdie, set to play Bowser Jr. The casting was verified by Chris Meledandri, the chief executive of Illumination.
The upcoming Mario film is set to release near the 40th anniversary of the first Super Mario Bros. title. Apart from the cinematic release, 2026 promises to be a significant year for Mario and his allies.
Nintendo has a trio of new releases publicly declared for 2026, featuring Mario Tennis Fever, a Switch 2 edition of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and a fresh Yoshi side-scroller titled Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is scheduled to hit theaters on April 3, 2026.
