The UK authorities has included an additional eleven new nations to its travel alert roster regarding the risks of methanol poisoning from tainted spirits.

The revised warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "an international surge in the incidence of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol contamination.

Just recently, the government had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, in response to multiple notable incidents like the fatal loss of six tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that even minimal doses of methanol can result in permanent eye damage or fatality within 12 to 48 hours.

What is Methanol and In what way is it Utilized?
